FAQ’s

What is a submeter?

A submeter is a device installed to monitor the usage of a specific commodity, such as electricity, gas, or water, in a specific area of a building. By measuring the exact energy consumed by each tenant, a submeter enables the facility manager or building owner to divide utility costs fairly by billing tenants for their actual usage. This in turn instills in them a sense of ownership of their energy consumption and inspires them to lower energy usage and subsequent costs. Submetering has been shown to reduce energy usage by as much 18-30% in the first year’ and these savings persist over time. Submeters are a simple, effective solution for better management of energy usage and cost reduction.

What is the purpose of submetering?

The purpose of submetering is to ensure that utility costs are distributed fairly. Submeters monitor the consumption of electricity and other commodities by a particular group of consumers within a building, apartment complex, campus, military facility, or shopping mall. Submetering allows building owners and facility managers to accurately bill tenants for their energy usage. Measuring and billing for the actual tenant usage rather than square footage billing, is fairer to the tenants and leads to their initiating energy savings and cost savings measures.

What are the different types of submeters?

The most common types of submeters are electric submeters, which monitor and record electricity usage for each unit of a multi-tenant building. Gas submeters measure natural gas usage and are often used in apartment complexes or commercial buildings. Water submeters monitor the flow of water and measure usage in buildings with multiple tenants or apartments.

Who uses electrical submeters?

Submeters are used by facility managers or building owners to accurately measure energy consumption among tenants or departments. A submeter is a tool for measuring the amount of electricity used by a single unit in a larger complex or building. This is particularly useful in situations where multiple units share a common power supply and each unit’s electricity usage needs to be individually calculated.
